There are over three hundred species.A rose’s symbolism varies by the color of the rose and how many are given.
Species that occurs naturally, with no help from man a true “wildflower.” Roses aren’t just for beds and borders.
Roses that have not been hybridized can cope with much more natural conditions and less cosseting.
They also tend to have more simple five petaled flowers.Rosa Rugosa has beautiful mid-pink flowers while the Alba variety, as the name suggests, has pure white flowers.
They were introduced from China to Europe in the 18th century where they were soon cross-fertilized with the true Old Roses.
The Old Roses are divided into two categories:
- Summer Flowering Old Roses
- Repeat Flowering Old Roses
Summer Flowering Old Roses are the true Old Roses of early European origin (these roses played a key part in the development of David Austin’s English Roses.) They only flower during the early summer, with a magnificent display.
Hybrid Tea and Floribunda Roses
Hybrid Tea Roses have been in cultivation since 1867 and are the most popular type of rose in the home garden. Hybrid tea roses are instantly recognizable for their distinctive shape and large pointed buds.
Floribunda roses are also the result of a hybrid tea cross with Polyantha roses and have clusters of big flowers that usually have a long flowering season. They are less known for their scent.
